Mamuli

Description

Mamuli (“მამული”) was a public Georgian immigrant newspaper published in New York, U.S. Its first issue appeared in November 2003, led by Manuchar Katchakhidze (Editor and Publisher), Eka Maisuradze (Assistant Editor), Paata Shubladze (Responsible Editor), and Kety Nemsitsveridze (Advertisement Manager). The name Mamuli may have been inspired by a magazine of the same name published in Buenos Aires (1951–53) under A. Papava’s editorship or by a 1977 cultural magazine from the Georgian community in Turkey.

Published monthly, Mamuli covered election results, major Georgian diasporic events in the U.S., and key political developments in both Georgia and the U.S. It also featured works of Georgian literature. Issue No. 1, for example, promoted Tbilisoba, a celebration of Tbilisi, scheduled for November 29 at Pier 62, Chelsea Piers, NYC. The newspaper served as a vital link for Georgian immigrants, keeping them connected to both their homeland and American culture. It proudly referred to itself as “The Patriotic Magazine of Georgians in the U.S.” (“ქართველთა პატრიოტული გამოცემა ამერიკაში”).

In Issue No. 68 (2012), Mamuli published “A Necessary Explanation from the Editor,” reaffirming its commitment to press freedom while condemning interference from certain individuals in the U.S. The editorial also announced a renewed format for its 10-year anniversary in 2013.

In August 2012, Mamuli appears in its renewed format with the new N1 edition counting as issue N69. Since then, Mamuli has published more editions, including their latest one at N82 in March 2017 as available on National Parliamentary Library of Georgia archives.
